Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario have awarded Canadian multidisciplinary consultant Stantec a contract to provide technical advisory services for the US$3.3bn Hurontario Light Rail public-private partnership project that will connect the cities of Mississauga and Brampton, near Toronto.
As lead technical adviser, Stantec will provide design, construction, and commissioning services. Design review services on this project have already commenced and are proceeding under Ontario’s definition of construction projects allowed to continue in the pandemic.
Gregg Cooke, Stantec’s vice president for transport, commented: "Governments are looking to provide smart and efficient mobility systems to better move growing urban populations, while reducing congestion and travel times. The Hurontario LRT will provide a sustainable transportation solution and economic opportunity to the citizens of Mississauga and Brampton for decades to come."
The 18km scheme will run from the Port Credit rail station near Lake Ontario to the Brampton Gateway Terminal, and include 19 stops. The deal includes operations, maintenance, and a storage facility located at Highway 407.
The line will be built by a consortium including Astaldi and Salini Impregilo of Italy, as well as Japanese engineer Hitachi.
The Hurontario LRT is one of a number of transit projects currently being delivered by Stantec.
Last month it was named as part of the team that would provide technical advice to the $8.2bn Ontario Line in Toronto, alongside Nebraska consultant HDR, UK-based consulting engineer Mott MacDonald and French engineer Systra.
The firm is the lead engineer on the $1.9bn Long Island Rail Road expansion for the Metropolitan transportation Authority in New York, which will modernise the busiest commuter line in America.
In Chicago, Stantec is leading the design on the Chicago Transit Authority’s $2.1bn Red and Purple Modernisation Programme. Stantec was also selected to provide infrastructure engineering, procurement, and construction services on Montreal’s Réseau Express Métropolitain, one of Quebec’s most important public transit projects.
